What Is Swimming?
Swimming, at its most basic, simply describes the way a human being moves his/her body through water. However, the act of swimming is so much more than just splashing in the waves. Swimming well takes dedication and practice. Learning to swim is an essential skill for water safety. But even aside from safety concerns, there are so many different reasons to engage in this sport.
Ask any group of people why they swim and you’re bound to get a multitude of answers. For some, swimming is a leisure activity. They do it to relax and to have fun. For other swimmers, it’s a form of exercise. Getting into a regular routine of swimming is a wonderful way to build muscle, endurance, and cardiovascular strength. Yet another group of people enjoy the competitive aspect of swimming and do it as a sport. These are the swimmers we watch at swim meets and every four years during the Summer Olympic Games.
A huge appeal about swimming is that individuals of any age can partake in it. Infants all the way up to the elderly can enjoy the water. In fact, many infants can swim on their own around the age of two, especially if they’ve been given lessons beginning before their first birthday. Elderly individuals tend to enjoy swimming for both the leisure of it and the health benefits. As we start to age our body becomes a little more fragile, and swimming in a pool allows us to get high-intensity cardiovascular exercise without the strain on our bones and joints.
So what is swimming? It’s a fun and sometimes relaxing form of water exercise that many people do for sport.

So you’ve decided that you want to learn how to swim. Or maybe you already know how and you want to learn to be a better swimmer and maybe even compete with others. Where do you begin?
If you’re interested in getting swim lessons for your child or yourself, you can always join a swim club or seek out a swim school where swimming lessons are being offered. Depending on your preference, you can enjoy private one-on-one lessons or group lessons.
The first step on the road of learning to swim is to either get swimming lessons or hire a swim coach. Depending on your individual learning style and your goal with swimming, you may benefit from either a group lesson or individualized one-on-one coaching. A good swim coach, will teach you proper form and tips for handling yourself in the water.
If you are planning on swimming for sport, your coach will teach you the four main swim strokes that are used in competition. Whether you’re competing locally or you’re aiming for the world stages at the Olympics, every competitive swimmer will want to know how to do the backstroke, the breaststroke, the butterfly, and how to freestyle swim. Each of these distinct swimming styles has its own mix of benefits in competition and many competitive swimmers, while knowing all four strokes will focus on one particular skill in which to excel. A great coach will help you find which style of competitive swimming is best for you.
